Judicial Retirement

Justice Yvon Pinard of the Federal Court is retiring effective July 1, 2013. Justice Pinard has been with the Federal Court since 1984 and has been a supernumerary judge since 2005.

Justice Pinard continues to hear cases and write reported decisions – 12 so far this year – primarily in the area of immigration although he has heard a number of IP cases in the last several years, including Apotex Inc. v. Shire Canada Inc., 2010 FC 1001 on the interplay of Section 8 proceedings and infringement actions, McCallum Industries Limited v. HJ Heinz Company Australia Ltd., 2011 FC 1216 on trademark confusion.

Seven judges have been appointed to the Federal Court in the last year, most recently Justice McVeigh in April.
