Why unwatch inactive files?

The Daily Email service allows subscribers to ‘watch’ specific Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal proceedings they are interested in.

I recommend “un-watching” files that are no longer of interest. Here are some reasons why:

  • clutters the results – The more daily updates there are, the more difficult it is to see important updates.
  • less burden on the Federal Court website and IPPractice.ca servers – For each proceeding that someone is monitoring, software at IPPractice.ca checks every day for updates or new developments by downloading the court docket available from the Federal Court website. For proceedings that have concluded, the check is useless. Subscribers are monitoring approximately 1200 different proceedings at the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal, about 10% of which there has been no activity for over two years. The more checks that have to be made, the longer (and later) it takes to send out the emails.

By unsubscribing, you help yourself simplify your daily email and help everyone by getting their daily email earlier in the evening.

You can unsubscribe from a proceeding by clicking the ‘unsubscribe’ button in your email. You can also manage your list of watched files by visiting the Email Manager. Periodically, a reminder about inactive files may appear in your daily email.
